NCC Sets Final Deadline For NIN-SIM Linkage: September 14, 2024
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set a final deadline of September 14, 2024, for the mandatory linkage of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers (NINs). In a statement released on Wednesday, August 28, the NCC emphasized that from September 15, 2024, all SIMs operating in Nigeria must be linked to a valid NIN.
Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, urged all Nigerians who have not yet completed the NIN-SIM linkage, or those experiencing verification issues, to promptly visit their service providers to update their details before the deadline.
Muoka highlighted that over 153 million SIMs have already been linked to NINs, reflecting a compliance rate of 96%, a significant increase from the 69.7% rate recorded in January 2024. However, the NCC is pushing for full compliance by the September 14 deadline.
The statement also noted the NCC’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies to eliminate the sale of pre-registered SIMs, which is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment and fines. The NCC’s efforts are aimed at safeguarding national security and ensuring the integrity of mobile numbers in Nigeria.
Muoka reiterated the importance of the NIN-SIM linkage for enhancing trust in Nigeria’s digital economy, reducing fraud and cybercrime, and promoting greater participation in digital banking and mobile money services, which contribute to economic growth and financial inclusion.
The NCC has directed all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to ensure the mandatory verification and linkage of SIMs to NINs is completed by the deadline. The public is reminded that the sale and purchase of pre-registered SIMs are illegal, and any such activities should be reported to the NCC via their toll-free line or social media platforms.
