ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States, imposed sanctions on Niger following the coup and has not ruled out the use of force against the army officers responsible for toppling the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum, on July 26.
These sanctions have included severing financial transactions, cutting off electricity supplies, and closing borders with landlocked Niger, severely impacting the country’s ability to access much-needed imports, especially as one of the world’s poorest nations.
The military leaders have criticized the sanctions, describing them as “illegal, inhumane, and humiliating,” and highlighting the difficulty they’ve created for Nigerians in accessing essential items like medicines, food, and electricity.
Despite these challenges, Zeine remains optimistic about upcoming talks with ECOWAS, particularly a visit by a Nigerian delegation.
He stressed the importance of preserving Niger’s historical relationship with Nigeria and the West African bloc.
Zeine emphasized that ECOWAS should initially focus on economic matters, prioritizing the well-being and prosperity of all member states and ensuring that the principle of solidarity benefits each country in the community.
Zeine also called on the people to trust the new authorities, emphasizing their commitment to integrity and competence in serving the nation.
