In a riveting session before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Onyeka Ogbu, a Deputy Director at the CBN, disclosed how Emefiele purportedly approved the release of the substantial sum for election monitoring activities.

Led by the EFCC’s legal counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, Ogbu presented critical documents related to the fund’s allocation, shedding light on the process that led to its disbursement.

However, the proceedings hit a snag when two crucial documents went missing, prompting a request for a trial adjournment to recover them.

Emefiele’s defense team, led by Mr. Matthew Burkaa, SAN, advocated for an adjournment to ensure due process. Justice Hamza Muazu subsequently scheduled the continuation of the trial for the following day.

This development follows the EFCC’s amended charges against Emefiele, alleging his involvement in criminal conspiracy, forgery, and breach of trust. Among the accusations is the claim that he orchestrated a procurement fraud amounting to N1.2 billion.

The amended charge accuses Emefiele of obtaining $6.2 million through false pretense, alleging that he misrepresented communications from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Moreover, the EFCC contends that Emefiele abused his position to award a lucrative contract for the renovation of the CBN Governor’s lodge to a company associated with his family members.

As the legal battle ensues, Emefiele remains on bail, subject to stringent conditions imposed by the court. The case continues to captivate public attention, unveiling layers of alleged corruption within the corridors of power.
