May disclosed her intention not to seek re-election as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Maidenhead in the next general election. Instead, she plans to focus on advocating for causes such as combating modern slavery.

In a statement to her local newspaper, the Maidenhead Advertiser, May expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve her constituents and champion important issues. She cited her recent efforts in launching a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking as examples of causes close to her heart that have demanded increasing attention.

The 67-year-old politician was first elected as MP for Maidenhead in 1997 and went on to serve as Home Secretary under David Cameron from 2010 to 2016. Following Cameron’s resignation, May succeeded him as Prime Minister, leading the country through turbulent Brexit negotiations.

Her tenure in Downing Street was marked by challenges, including a snap election in 2017 that resulted in the loss of her parliamentary majority. Despite this setback, May continued to lead the government with the support of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) from Northern Ireland.

Reflecting on her time in office, May expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve her constituents and vowed to continue working for them until the upcoming general election, expected in the latter half of the year. She also pledged her support to current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Conservative Party, expressing confidence in their ability to secure victory in Maidenhead.
