Governor Mbah recently issued a 72-hour demolition notice to shop owners, prompting resistance from various stakeholders. In a joint statement, three national and state assembly members appealed to the governor to suspend the exercise.

In his statement on Friday, Honorable Harrison Ogara highlighted the risks of displacing over 7,000 traders from Ogige Nsukka Market without providing an alternative market for relocation. He expressed concern that traders, with wares valued at over N10 billion, had already moved their goods home due to the lack of alternative markets.

Ogara criticized the decision to relocate traders to the Aku road market, originally intended for a GSM market with fewer than 150 shops. He warned against ignoring the potential catastrophe and loss of life resulting from this action, emphasizing the chaotic situation already present at Ogige Market.

The assembly member proposed alternative solutions, suggesting funds be allocated to repair the Ikpa market for traders to relocate. He also recommended constructing an interchange at Opi junction, away from the town center, to minimize collateral damage.

Ogara underscored the importance of speaking out against such decisions, labeling silence as an act of cowardice in the face of impending tragedies. He called on the government to reconsider its approach to the demolition to prevent further harm to the affected traders and the community at large.
