According to eyewitness accounts, the thugs beat up a young man and seized his phone. A young lady was also attacked, struck on the forehead with a stick, and had her phones taken away. Protesters are demanding the immediate return of the seized phones.
One of the protesters, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation, said, “They came out of nowhere and started beating us. They took my phone and hit my friend. We were only there to express our concerns peacefully.”
Photographic evidence has surfaced online, purportedly showing the attack in progress. In frame one, men wearing red caps can be seen participating in the assault. Frame two clearly shows Anthony Onoriode’s thugs in action, aggressively confronting the protesters. Frame three highlights one of the victims, identified on social media as @AlhajiPblue, who had his phone taken during the altercation. Frame four allegedly captures Anthony Onoriode himself, actively participating in the violence.
Activists have voiced their outrage on social media, condemning the brutal tactics used against the peaceful demonstrators. “Being animalistic on peaceful protesters will not stop them from gathering to exercise their right. You are meant to protect them, not brutalize them,” one tweet read.
The governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, is facing increasing pressure to address the actions of his representative and the thugs involved. Protesters and concerned citizens are calling for a thorough investigation and accountability for the violence inflicted on innocent individuals exercising their constitutional rights.
A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed dismay at the actions of the thugs. “It’s disheartening to see such brutality in our community. We need to be able to express our concerns without fear of violence. The authorities must take action against those responsible.”
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and civil society groups. They are urging the governor to ensure the safety of citizens and uphold the rule of law.
As the community reels from the shock of the assault, the demand for justice and accountability continues to grow. The protesters vow to keep their fight for their rights alive, despite the threats and violence they face.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the need for respect for peaceful assembly and the protection of citizens’ rights. The eyes of the nation are now on Delta State, awaiting the governor’s response to this alarming act of brutality.
