Enugu Court Jails Cybercriminal Okwudili Joseph for Fraud
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Enugu has sentenced Okwudili Joseph to two years in prison for cybercrime. The court’s decision was announced on Tuesday, September 10, following Joseph’s conviction on charges of impersonation and internet fraud.
Joseph, prosecuted by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), faced a single count of fraud involving impersonation. The EFCC’s post on X revealed that Joseph had fraudulently posed as Jim Warren, a gas detection specialist from the United States, with the intention of securing personal gain.
The court charge stated: “That you, Okwudili Joseph, on or about June 5, 2024, in Enugu, Enugu State, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, fraudulently impersonated one Jim Warren with the intent to gain advantage for yourself, thus committing an offence contrary to Section 22 (3) (a) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and punishable under Section 22 (4) of the same Act.”
Upon being read the charge, Joseph pleaded guilty. The prosecution, led by Mohammed Shehu, requested a conviction and sentence, while the defense counsel, G. C. Ugwele, appealed for leniency, citing Joseph’s remorse and lessons learned from his actions.
Justice Umar’s ruling resulted in Joseph being sentenced to two years of imprisonment with hard labour or an alternative fine of N200,000. This verdict underscores the judiciary’s commitment to tackling cybercrime and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria.
