Explosive Violence: Anambra Police Officers Gunned Down By Militants

Tragedy struck in Uruagu, a community in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, as unidentified gunmen reportedly killed two police officers. According to Naija News, the incident occurred early Thursday morning while the officers were conducting an investigation.

An eyewitness shared with Punch that the attackers launched a surprise assault on the police team, resulting in a fierce exchange of gunfire. During the confrontation, the assailants threw an improvised explosive device (IED) at the officers, which detonated, killing two officers instantly.

The source stated, “In the heat of the gunfire, the assailants hurled an IED at the operatives, causing an immediate explosion that resulted in the death of two officers.”

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the incident and noted that security operatives have initiated a manhunt for the perpetrators.

Ikenga reassured the public of the command’s commitment to ensuring justice is served and encouraged anyone with relevant information to assist the police in their ongoing investigation.

He stated, “The Joint Security Force has commenced a manhunt for the armed men responsible for the murder of two police officers during an investigative operation this morning, October 3, 2024, in Uruagu, Nnewi North.”

“Preliminary reports indicate that the attackers opened fire upon sighting the police team and threw an improvised explosive device into their operational vehicle, which unfortunately resulted in the officers’ deaths and set the vehicle ablaze.”
