Akpabio Sounds Alarm Over Soaring Food Prices In Nigeria
According to Ireporter Online, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed deep concern over the rising cost of food and the growing threat of hunger in Nigeria, urging urgent and coordinated national action to prevent a worsening food crisis. Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during his welcome address at the first Senate sitting following the Christmas and New Year recess, describing the situation as a serious challenge to national stability and citizens’ well-being.
Citing a recent United Nations projection, Akpabio warned that as many as 35 million Nigerians could face hunger this year, framing the development as a national emergency. He highlighted that the surging cost of food has placed severe pressure on households, particularly the most vulnerable, and emphasized that tackling hunger should now be a top national priority.
“This sobering reality demands a doubling of effort through legislation, oversight, and collaboration to strengthen food security, protect the vulnerable, and ensure that no Nigerian is left to despair,” he said. According to him, the Senate will intensify efforts on laws and policies that promote agricultural productivity, stabilize food supply chains, and alleviate the impact of inflation on ordinary Nigerians.
Akpabio stressed the importance of decisive legislative action to shield citizens from the harsh effects of rising prices and economic hardship. Beyond food insecurity, he praised the continued military cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in combating terrorism, noting that the partnership remained active even during the festive period.
He also extended condolences to families affected by insecurity nationwide, describing the ongoing security challenges as real human tragedies involving loss of life, shattered homes, and uncertain futures. He called for collective prayers and commitment toward securing the release of Nigerians still held in captivity, describing their situation as a “national wound” that requires moral attention.
In addition, the Senate President acknowledged the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District, describing him as diligent, humble, and committed. The Senate observed a minute of silence in his honour and conveyed condolences to his family, constituents, and the government of Nasarawa State.
Reflecting on developments during the recess, Akpabio noted that Nigerians continue to endure economic hardship, insecurity, and social pressures but remain resilient and hopeful. He emphasized that citizens now demand leadership that listens and governance that delivers tangible results.
With political activities intensifying, Akpabio urged political actors to exercise restraint, stressing that national unity and stability must not be compromised by personal ambitions. He described democracy as thriving when competition is principled and the national interest is prioritized.
Turning to the Senate’s legislative agenda, Akpabio said the Tenth Senate has entered a decisive phase with less than one year and five months remaining in its tenure. He urged senators to act with urgency, focus, and discipline, emphasizing that the remaining period should be dedicated to high-impact, people-centered laws that stimulate economic growth, strengthen institutions, and restore public confidence.
On the 2026 budget, Akpabio assured that the Senate would give it prompt attention, promising thorough scrutiny, responsible passage, and faithful implementation in collaboration with the Executive. He reminded lawmakers of their duty as representatives of the people, urging them to finish their tenure strongly.
“Let it be said that when the Tenth Senate reached the final stretch, it did not slow down, it did not look away, and it did not leave the work unfinished,” he concluded.
