Omotola Jalade Donates ₦22m ‘Mother’s Love’ Profit To Charity

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has disclosed that her movie, A Mother’s Love, generated ₦103.09 million during its cinema run, while the producers received ₦22 million after various deductions.

According to Ireporter Online, Omotola made the disclosure in a video shared online while giving an account of the film’s box-office performance and the amount ultimately realised by her production company.

She explained that the film’s gross earnings were reduced by several charges, including exhibitors’ shares, distribution costs, advertising expenses, VAT, entertainment tax, withholding tax and other deductions.

Omotola said the ₦22 million that accrued to the producers represented the net proceeds from the cinema run.

She further revealed that, in line with a commitment made by her production company, Red Hot Concepts, the net proceeds were donated to the non-governmental organisation Slum to School.

The actress described the cinema experience as a new challenge for her, noting that it was her first time personally undertaking cinema runs and engaging directly with the promotional demands associated with a theatrical release.

According to her, she eventually had to withdraw the movie from cinemas earlier than planned because of pressing commitments that prevented her from giving the project the level of promotion and physical presence she considered necessary.

Despite the challenges, Omotola described the cinema run as a positive experience and expressed satisfaction with the decision to channel the proceeds towards a social cause.

Her disclosure has also generated conversations about the economics of Nigerian cinema, particularly the significant deductions that can reduce the amount ultimately received by filmmakers from box-office earnings.
