Citizens’ Participation And Its Awareness Is A Necessary Facet Of Every Democracy

The role of citizens in the operations of a government should be more vivid in a democratic system of governance. Democratic citizens should acknowledge their rights and responsibilities and accept that their time and constant vigilance cannot be overlooked as a service they must render.

Democratic citizens should understand their role in monitoring and evaluating of government policy and help in shaping policy making. It is in their place to bear the burden of responsibility for their society in order to benefit from its protection of their civil rights.

For the progress and success of a democratic government, citizens must be active, not passive, because their activity or inactivity would result in the success or failure of the government.

In a situation where citizens are unsatisfied with the performance of elected officials, they are at liberty to demand for change or vote said officials out of office at stipulated time for elections. Asides from periodic votes from citizens, a healthy democracy can also be achieved through firm commitment of the majority citizens dedicating their time and attention to provide checks and balance to the government.
