2023 Elections: See The Breakdown Of Seats Won By Political Parties In The National Assembly

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the breakdown of seats in the National Assembly won by political parties.

On February 25, the commission held presidential and National Assembly elections.

During a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja on Saturday, INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu stated that eight political parties produced lawmakers in the election.

The parties are —the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) African Democratic Party (ADC) Young People Party (YPP).

The country has 18 recognized political parties.

According to Mr Yakubu, elections for 423 of the 469 national legislative seats have been completed and results have been announced.

He stated that 98 out of 109 Senate seats have been declared, while 325 out of 360 House of Representatives seats have been declared.

He stated that the APC won a Senate majority with 57 seats, while the PDP received 29.

While LP has six seats, NNPP and SDP each have two, and APGA and YPP each have one.

Mr Yakubu said in the House of Representatives, the APC has so far won 162 seats out of the 325 seats declared while PDP won 102.

He said LP and NNPP have 34 and 18 seats respectively, APGA four seats, ADC and SDP two each while YPP got one seat.

The APC has formed a majority in the upper chamber with 57 seats, but has yet to do so in the lower House. A party needs 180 seats in the House to form a majority.

Mr Yakubu announced that supplementary elections will be held in 46 constituencies to fill the remaining seats in the National Assembly. He did not, however, specify a date for the exercise.

The INEC boss also revealed that senators-elect will receive their certificates of return on March 7 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, while House of Representatives-elect will receive theirs on March 8 at the same location.
