Lookman’s journey to representing Nigeria began with a pivotal decision to switch allegiance from England, a move officially ratified by FIFA in 2022. Having previously featured for England at various youth levels, the 26-year-old made the bold choice to embrace his Nigerian heritage and don the colors of the Super Eagles.
Throughout the AFCON tournament, Lookman has emerged as one of Nigeria’s standout performers, showcasing his prowess with three goals and one assist to his name. His contributions include a crucial winner against Angola and a brace in the last-16 victory over Cameroon, catapulting him into the spotlight as a key asset for the team.
With his scoring feat, Lookman etched his name alongside Nigerian football legends, joining the ranks of Odion Ighalo, Austin Okocha, and Rashidi Yekini as one of the few players to score three or more goals in the knockout rounds of a single AFCON tournament.
Reflecting on the intense scrutiny and expectations that accompany wearing the Super Eagles jersey, Lookman candidly acknowledged the pressure he feels each time he steps onto the field. In an interview with BBC, he expressed pride in representing Nigeria but admitted to the weight of responsibility that comes with it.
“Every single time I put on the jersey, that’s just what comes with being a Nigerian and playing for the country, so I’m proud to do that, to take that responsibility,” Lookman shared.
As Nigeria continues its quest for AFCON glory, Lookman’s resilience and determination on the pitch serve as a testament to his commitment to the team and his desire to make a meaningful impact on the international stage.
