The letter congratulated Akpabio on his nomination and invited him to the first meeting of the Preparatory Committee at the IPU Headquarters in Geneva on May 16-17, 2024. It highlighted the significance of the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which has been convened every five years since 2000 to reinforce the parliamentary dimension in the work of the United Nations and bridge the democracy gap in international relations.

The composition of the Preparatory Committee was endorsed by the IPU governing bodies during the 148th IPU Assembly. The committee consists of around 20 Speakers of Parliament, select representatives of the IPU Executive Committee, and the senior representative of the UN Secretary-General.

The committee’s responsibilities include spearheading preparations for the 2025 Speakers’ Conference, with multiple meetings planned over an 18-month preparatory period. These meetings will address various aspects of the conference, including its objectives, format, themes, and expected outcomes.

Akpabio joins a distinguished group of committee members from around the world, representing diverse regions and parliamentary systems. The committee’s collaborative efforts will play a crucial role in shaping the agenda and ensuring the success of the 2025 Speakers’ Conference.
