Eboigbodin tragically collapsed and passed away on Monday following a confrontation with police officers at a checkpoint in Upper Sakponba, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area in Benin City. Although the police have launched an investigation, they noted that the officers may not have directly caused Eboigbodin’s death, but their actions contributed to the worsening of his condition before they fled the scene.

In response, NLC, through a statement from its Head of Information and Public Affairs, Benson Upah, dismissed the police’s explanation as “lame and ridiculous,” demanding immediate action. The NLC insisted that no resolution would be satisfactory unless the officers involved are promptly arrested and prosecuted.

The union also called on the Edo State Police Command and the Nigeria Police Force as a whole to avoid any cover-up of the incident, urging the police to hold its officers accountable rather than shielding them in the interest of maintaining their image.

The tragic death has sparked widespread outrage, with many insisting on justice for Eboigbodin, whose death has left a deep void in the labour community.
