TUC President Festus Osifo expressed his concerns, asserting that while the bills are beneficial, the debates surrounding them are to be expected.

He pointed out that the issues surrounding the bills began with the Northern Governors Forum and escalated through the General Governors’ Forum, eventually reaching the National Economic Council. Osifo stressed that at this critical juncture, the country should avoid turning these matters into political or ethnic issues.

“We should not politicize everything. Introducing tribal or ethnic discussions is not the right approach,” he stated.

The bills, which President Bola Tinubu presented to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, have sparked significant debate. Some state governors have voiced opposition, calling for further consultations before moving forward with the reforms.

The proposed legislation includes the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill 2024, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill 2024, and the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024. These bills are central to the government’s strategy for tax reform.

TUC’s Osifo emphasized the importance of focusing on the economic goals of the reform rather than allowing political or ethnic rhetoric to derail progress.
