Atlanta ’96 Heroes: Kaduna Gov Sani Makes Major Promise To Nigeria’s Olympic Stars

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has honoured members of Nigeria’s historic Atlanta 1996 Olympic football team with land allocations and plans to name streets across the state after the sporting legends.

Sani announced the gesture on Tuesday during an inspection of the ongoing reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna, where he was accompanied by former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro, all members of the celebrated Olympic squad.

According to the governor, the initiative is part of efforts to fulfil a commitment made to the Atlanta Olympic heroes nearly three decades ago.

He disclosed that land had already been allocated to the former players, while plans were also underway to name some streets across Kaduna State after them.

Sani said the contribution of the former footballers to Nigerian sports deserved lasting recognition beyond public commendation.

“Lands have been allocated to the legends, while streets across Kaduna State will bear their names,” the governor said.

He added that the players “deserve not merely our applause, but enduring recognition.”

Meanwhile, work on the reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium is progressing, with the Kaduna State Government projecting November 2026 for the completion of the project.

Sani said the facility was being transformed into a modern, FIFA-standard sporting complex, with the main stadium bowl expanded to accommodate 33,000 spectators.

The new capacity represents more than double the stadium’s previous 16,000-seat capacity.

The governor also disclosed that the renovated complex would feature a hybrid turf, which he described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, as well as other facilities designed to meet international standards.

He said the training pitches had been completed, while work was continuing on the main bowl, ticketing areas, media centre and athletes’ hostel.

Sani stressed that the project was designed to go beyond the renovation of an existing facility, describing it as an effort to restore Kaduna’s position as one of Nigeria’s major sporting centres.

“We are restoring Kaduna’s historic place at the heart of Nigerian sports; attracting major competitions; expanding opportunities for our young people; increasing internally generated revenue; and stimulating wider economic activity,” he said.

The governor expressed confidence that the reconstructed stadium would be ready by November 2026 to host major national and international sporting competitions.

“Kaduna is not merely rebuilding a stadium. We are rebuilding a legacy and reclaiming our rightful place in Nigerian sports,” Sani said.
