Benue University Joins SSANU, NASU Strike

Following an emergency congress held on Monday, March 18, 2024, the JAC unanimously decided to commence a seven-day warning strike to press home their demands, citing the government’s failure to address their grievances.

In a letter jointly signed by Kpamor Ruth and Saa Girgi Moses, the unions expressed disappointment over the lack of a positive response from the government despite patiently waiting for the ultimatum to expire.

The letter read, “JAC waited patiently till the expiration of the ultimatum without positive response to the demands of the unions. Consequently, JAC directed her members in the universities and inter-university centres nationwide to commence a seven-day warning strike effective Monday, 18th March, 2024 in the first instance.”

Addressing the Vice Chancellor of the university in a letter titled “Commencement of A-7 Day JAC Nationwide Warning Strike,” the unions appealed to the university management to understand their stance as they embark on the warning strike.

The key issues driving the strike, as outlined by the unions, include the renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government/SSANU agreement, reconstitution of governing councils of universities, payment of four months withheld salaries, release of earned allowances, and improved funding of universities.

Festus Omemu, the Secretary of SSANU, criticized the government for its failure to fulfill agreements with the unions, particularly regarding withheld salaries and funding of institutions. He expressed grave concern over the repercussions of the government’s actions, emphasizing the dire economic consequences faced by many.

Omemu issued a stern warning that if the Federal Government does not address their demands promptly, the unions will escalate their action to an indefinite strike following the conclusion of the seven-day warning period.
