BREAKING: Israel Troops Encircle Gaza (DETAILS)

Israeli ground forces have surrounded Gaza City in their conflict with Hamas. US diplomat Antony Blinken has arrived in Israel to focus on measures to minimize civilian casualties among Palestinians.

Before Blinken’s arrival, Israel’s military announced the completion of the encirclement of Gaza City, marking a new phase in the nearly month-long conflict.

The fighting began after Hamas launched attacks on October 7, resulting in over 1,400 reported casualties according to Israeli officials.

The Gaza health ministry, run by Hamas, claims that over 9,000 people, mostly women and children, have died due to Israeli bombardments. Fresh Israeli strikes on Friday morning led to reported casualties in Gaza City’s Zeitun neighborhood and Jabalia refugee camp.

Blinken expressed a commitment to reducing harm to Palestinian civilians, signaling a shift in US tone. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israeli troops have made significant progress, advancing beyond the outskirts of Gaza City.

Gaza City is described by Israel’s military as the center of the Hamas terror organization. Despite warnings to evacuate, many of the city’s residents have endured weeks of airstrikes, limited supplies, and daily violence.

As the conflict shifts towards urban and underground warfare, with Hamas operating from a vast tunnel complex, more challenges and casualties are expected. The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military wing, stated that Israeli soldiers would return in “black bags,” emphasizing their determination.

Israel’s allies have supported its right to self-defense, but there is increasing global concern and criticism regarding Israel’s conduct of the war. UN-mandated human rights experts warned of a potential humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, calling for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of captured civilians.

Israel and the US have ruled out a blanket ceasefire to prevent Hamas from regrouping and resupplying. US President Joe Biden has endorsed temporary, localized pauses in fighting for humanitarian efforts.

Countries worldwide have recalled their ambassadors from Israel in protest, and Bolivia has severed diplomatic ties. Israel argues that its targeting of Jabalia was justified, citing the elimination of a senior Hamas commander in an underground complex.

On Thursday, more foreigners and dual nationals, along with wounded Palestinians, managed to escape the conflict to Egypt. Egypt has committed to helping evacuate 7,000 foreigners through the Rafah crossing.

The UN reported a significant increase in aid trucks entering Gaza on Thursday, but the total falls short of what aid agencies say is needed.

In northern Israel, Lebanon’s Hezbollah claimed to have simultaneously attacked 19 Israeli positions along the border. The conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides, with 71 reported deaths in Lebanon and nine in Israel.

Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, is expected to address the situation, potentially influencing the region’s course. Analysts have differing opinions on Hezbollah’s level of involvement in the conflict, with some suggesting it may be limited to avoid further destabilizing Lebanon. Others believe the decision ultimately rests with Iran, which supports various armed groups in the region.
