BREAKING: Presidential Candidate In Intensive Care Unit (DETAILS)

Detained Senegalese opposition figure Ousmane Sonko, who resumed a hunger strike eight days ago, is now in a “very weak” state and under intensive care, according to one of his lawyers who spoke to AFP on Wednesday.

Cire Cledor Ly stated that Sonko briefly fell into a coma on October 23, and though he regained consciousness later that day, he remains frail. He added that doctors are administering treatment that Sonko is unable to refuse.

Cledor Ly made a heartfelt plea to the head of state, urging him to intervene and end the situation. Sonko, who plans to run in the presidential election in February, accuses President Macky Sall of using legal procedures to thwart his political ambitions, a claim that Sall denies.

Over the past two years, Sonko has faced a series of legal challenges, including arrest and imprisonment on various charges. He initiated a hunger strike on July 30, which he temporarily halted on September 2 at the request of influential religious leaders.

After being admitted to an intensive care unit in August, Sonko resumed the strike on October 17. His name was removed from electoral lists following a conviction in June, though a judge ruled last week against his removal. The General Directorate of Elections, however, has yet to issue him sponsorship forms, asserting that the judge’s decision is not final.

President Sall announced in July that he would not seek a third term, a move that many argued would have been unconstitutional.
