BREAKING: Presidential Run-off Election To Hold In November (DETAILS)
The National Election Commission (NEC) of Liberia announced on Tuesday that the presidential election run-off is scheduled for 14 November. This decision comes after none of the 20 candidates managed to secure over 50 percent of the votes in the initial round.
Incumbent president and flag bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), George Weah, and former vice president and flag bearer of the Unity Party (UP), Joseph Boakai, emerged as the top two candidates in the first round.

Weah received 43.83 percent of the votes (804,087 votes), while Boakai received 43.44 percent of the votes (796,961).
Campaigning for the run-off will resume from 24 October to 12 November 2023 at 11:59 p.m.

This situation echoes history, as the previous presidential election in 2017 in Liberia also culminated in a run-off between Weah and Boakai. Weah ultimately won with 61.5 percent of the votes in the run-off, while Boakai secured 38.5 percent.

In the upcoming 2023 election, Weah seeks a second and final term, while Boakai endeavors to achieve his long-held aspiration of becoming president.
NEC Chairperson Davidetta Lansanah highlighted that the 10 October election marked an unprecedented event in Liberia’s modern democratic history. She attributed this in part to the commission’s successful transition from the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) system of voter registration to the use of biometric technology, which produced a highly accurate Final Registration Roll for the elections.
According to the commission’s records, 1.9 million voters, accounting for 79 percent of the 2.4 million registered voters, participated in the election.
While largely peaceful, the 10 October elections saw post-Election Day incidents, including disruptions in the tallying process and electoral misconduct by some temporary staff recruited by the NEC.
Lansanah noted that temporary staff allegedly involved in electoral misconduct have been detained pending court proceedings. She also mentioned that their names are marked in the NEC database, rendering them ineligible for future election duties.
Furthermore, in Nimba County, two polling stations in precinct Beo Lontuo experienced disruptions in the counting process, with individuals absconding with ballot boxes and causing damage. This necessitated a re-run of the three elections at the two affected polling stations in that precinct.
