[BREAKING] Rivers Crisis: What Court Just Did To Youth Leader, 120 Others Arrested

Chijioke Ihunwo, the Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, was brought before the magistrate court in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Ihunwo, along with 120 others, appeared at Rivers Magistrate Court 22 on Wednesday, where they faced a five-count charge. The charges included conspiracy, inciting a riot, damaging the gate of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, unlawful assembly, and causing a breach of public peace.

All the accused youths pleaded ‘not guilty’ when the charges were read out.

Afterwards, the defendants’ counsel, Alabo Tamunowari, applied for bail, asserting that they had four reliable sureties who would produce all 121 accused individuals when required. The prosecution counsel, Enyiepere Sikpi, opposed the bail application, questioning the credibility of the sureties’ addresses.

After considering both arguments, the magistrate, Gift Amadi Esq, granted bail to all the defendants at the sum of 100,000 each, and scheduled the matter for hearing on December 5, 2023. The number of sureties was increased to 20, all of whom must have verifiable addresses.

Chigozie Emeh, one of the defendants and a lawyer, was granted bail on self-recognition.

Speaking to reporters outside the courthouse, one of the defendants’ counsel, Higher King Esq, expressed concerns about the actions of the police, stating, “they will go home, why won’t they go home? It’s a bailable offense.”

“It’s not bringing frivolous charges, when you bring charges, you must sustain the charge. They were rounded up yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday) they’re already in court, no investigation, no proof of evidence, nothing, but we’re in court with them,” King added.

The prosecution counsel declined to comment when approached.
