CJN Laments Over Political Cases

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, expressed apprehension regarding the substantial caseload, particularly those of political nature, that judges handle on a daily basis.

Justice Ariwoola conveyed these concerns on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony of recently appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

He also advocated for a reduction in litigation and emphasized the importance of alternative dispute resolution methods. Justice Ariwoola argued that this approach would alleviate the workload of justices and help conserve valuable resources.

The Supreme Court was filled with families and friends of the nine newly appointed Justices of the Court of Appeal, as well as heads of courts, the President of the Court of Appeal, members of the outer and inner Bar, and other high-ranking government officials.

Justice Ariwoola advised the jurists to uphold their reputation and steer clear of temptations that may arise from enticing gifts.

In accordance with the practice direction of the Court of Appeal, which allows for a total of 90 justices, the swearing-in of nine new justices increases the number of judges from 71 to 80.
