Major General Ahmed Sabo (retd), the captain of Calabar Golf Club, highlighted the detrimental impact of governmental disinterest, attributing it to the absence of major international tournaments in Cross River State.
During a courtesy visit by a delegation from Calabar Golf Club to Governor Bassey Otu, Sabo emphasized golf’s potential as a significant tourist attraction, particularly through the hosting of top-tier tournaments.
“We urge the state government to recognize golf’s capacity to draw distinguished individuals to the state, thereby enhancing tourism,” Sabo remarked.
Expressing solidarity with the Otu-led administration’s efforts to enhance the state’s prospects, the club pledged its support and presented golfing equipment to the governor as a gesture of patronage.
In response, Governor Bassey Otu reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalizing golf as a prestigious sport capable of attracting both national and international attention, along with investment opportunities.
Acknowledging Calabar’s historical significance as the birthplace of golf in Nigeria, Otu underscored the imperative of reclaiming and reinstating the city’s prominence in the sport’s landscape.
“We are engaged in a concerted effort to not only reclaim but also reintegrate ourselves into the golfing sphere, despite being somewhat behind due to technological advancements,” Otu affirmed.
Assuring the golf club of his administration’s support, the governor pledged assistance in maintaining the club’s course, underscoring the importance of nurturing and preserving the sport’s infrastructure.
