Corruption Crackdown: AIG Vows To Punish Cops Who Stole ₦3 Million From Victim!

In a statement dated July 1, 2024, and signed by SP Nelson Okpabi, the Zonal PRO, Towuru announced that the five officers have been taken into custody and that an investigation is underway. He affirmed that the zone will not tolerate any criminal behavior among its officers.

It is worth recalling that these officers, while on patrol along the Ikom-Calabar highway, were alleged to have engaged in corrupt practices and unprofessional conduct. Recently, there have been numerous complaints from motorists and highway users about intimidation and extortion by policemen at numerous checkpoints.

The statement read: “The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 6 headquarters in Calabar, strongly condemns the unprofessional conduct of the policemen alleged to have abducted and fraudulently extorted ₦3,000,000 from an individual last week.

“The AIG has ordered a high-powered investigation into the matter to uncover the facts behind the allegations and to ensure informed disciplinary measures are taken.

“The crime and criminality zero-tolerant AIG vowed to ensure that appropriate disciplinary measures are enforced against the erring officers to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The Zone will not tolerate any criminality among officers tasked with the responsibility of crime prevention and order maintenance.”

The statement concluded by noting that the results of the investigation and disciplinary measures, including the possibility of prosecution, will be made public in due course.
