The order, granted in response to a motion presented by esteemed human rights activist Femi Falana SAN, underscores the urgent need for price stabilization in critical sectors of the economy. Falana’s motion sought judicial intervention to address the government’s failure to impose price controls on various items listed under the Price Control Act.

With no opposition from the respondents, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Price Control Board, the court affirmed the validity of Falana’s assertions. Consequently, the Nigerian government is now legally bound to set fixed prices for a range of essential commodities, including milk, flour, salt, sugar, bicycles and their spare parts, matches, motorcycles and their spare parts, motor vehicles and their spare parts, as well as petroleum products such as diesel, petrol motor spirit (PMS), and kerosene.
