Nigeria. The incident occurred on Friday, December 29, 2024, in Osina, Ideato North Local Government Area.
According to a statement from the 34 Artillery Brigade, the soldiers were responding to a distress call about an IPOB/ESN attack when they encountered the militants. The shootout resulted in the tragic loss of two soldiers, with another still unaccounted for. The troops, using superior firepower, pursued the fleeing militants, recovering weapons including an AK-47 rifle and a tear gas launcher.
Following the clash, the Nigerian military pursued the militants into nearby Nkwachi and Umalouma forests, neutralizing one IPOB fighter and recovering several weapons. Despite the setback, the military is determined to track down the injured militants and dismantle their hideouts. The army has urged the remaining fighters to surrender, emphasizing that failure to do so will result in further action.
The army remains committed to ensuring peace during the Yuletide period in Imo State and is urging citizens to cooperate by providing intelligence on militant movements. The IPOB group, which seeks to establish an independent Biafra, has denied involvement in the attacks.
