Divine Mercy Saved Anthony Joshua, Says RCCG General Overseer

Pastor Adeboye made this assertion on Sunday while delivering a message during the church’s monthly thanksgiving service, where he spoke extensively on divine mercy as a tool for preservation. He referenced Joshua’s recent accident as a clear example of how mercy can intervene in life-threatening situations.

Anthony Joshua was involved in a serious road crash along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway last Monday. While he survived the incident, the accident claimed the lives of two of his close friends, Ayodele Kelvin, a 36-year-old Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, also aged 36 and a British national. Other occupants of the vehicle reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries.

In his sermon, Adeboye cited Lamentations 3:22–23, emphasizing that survival is not a product of human intelligence or caution but of divine mercy. He noted that life is sustained by God’s compassion rather than personal cleverness.

The cleric further revealed that reports indicated Joshua had exchanged seats with another occupant shortly before the crash, adding that those who took the exchanged seats lost their lives. According to him, the incident underscores the mysterious workings of divine mercy, which allowed Joshua to remain alive.

Adeboye, who anchored his message on Psalm 89:1, explained that the frequent use of singular expressions in the Psalms reflects personal conviction and importance. He urged worshippers to internalize the message of mercy on a personal level, stressing that divine intervention is often individual and intentional.

He concluded by encouraging members of the congregation to see the message not as a general teaching but as a personal reminder of the role of God’s mercy in their daily lives.
