LASTMA Calls For Stronger Media Alliance To Tackle Lagos Traffic Challenges

According to Ireporter Online, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has praised media practitioners for their consistent professionalism and support in reporting the agency’s activities throughout 2025, describing the relationship as crucial to effective traffic management in Lagos State.

Bakare-Oki gave the commendation during an assessment of LASTMA’s engagement with the media, noting that journalists across print, broadcast and digital platforms have played a significant role in shaping public understanding of the agency’s mandate, operations and interventions. He stated that sustained media coverage has boosted public awareness and reinforced confidence in traffic management policies and enforcement across the state.

The LASTMA boss explained that media feedback, reflecting both public sentiment and expert opinion, has been largely positive while offering constructive criticism that has helped the agency fine-tune its policies and enhance operational efficiency. He emphasized that the media remains a vital partner in public enlightenment and behavioural change, adding that analytical reporting and informed critiques have enriched policy discussions and reform initiatives within the agency.

Bakare-Oki also highlighted the introduction of the ‘LASTMA Media Mayors’ initiative, which allows journalists to gain firsthand exposure to traffic management operations across Lagos. He said the initiative has promoted transparency, strengthened stakeholder engagement and improved the quality of reportage through practical insights.

He stressed that the increasing complexity of urban mobility in Lagos makes it necessary to deepen and strategically strengthen collaboration with the media, particularly in encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic regulations and ensuring timely dissemination of traffic updates to road users.

On operational performance, Bakare-Oki disclosed that more than 1,800 personnel were deployed under the ‘LASTMA 24-Hour Night Gangs’ initiative during the 2025 “Detty December” festivities. He noted that the round-the-clock operation significantly eased congestion on major routes, reduced night-time traffic violations and improved overall road safety during the festive period.

Reiterating that effective traffic governance in a megacity like Lagos depends on strong enforcement, active public cooperation and responsible media engagement, the LASTMA General Manager said sustainable success can only be achieved through collective responsibility.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transparency, professionalism and stakeholder collaboration, expressing optimism that the New Year would bring a stronger and more impactful partnership with the media toward ensuring safer and more orderly roads across Lagos State.
