Out of the $25 million, $4 million is dedicated to humanitarian action to address the devastating effects of terrorism and mitigate the consequences of natural disasters in the region. Sarr emphasized the importance of humanitarian actions due to the numerous crises and displacements occurring within the community.
Specifically, ECOWAS has allocated $9 million for internally displaced people, refugees, asylum seekers, and the communities hosting them across all 15 member countries. Additionally, $1 million has been designated for stabilization efforts in Nigeria, focusing on victims of terrorism, displaced persons, injured individuals, rehabilitation, and strengthening community resilience.
Furthermore, ECOWAS has set aside $4 million from the $25 million fund for humanitarian actions to fight terrorism in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. In 2023, ECOWAS provided support totaling over $12.6 million to four million out of the 8.5 million victims of violent conflicts and disasters across West Africa.
Sarr also mentioned specific instances of support, including $600,000 allocated to the Republic of Guinea, which was under sanctions in January. This support included $100,000 for fire disasters and $499,390 for floods in the country.
Moreover, ECOWAS has implemented programs for the development and empowerment of young people in the subregion, focusing on volunteerism, sports, and economic integration as key intervention areas.
