Edo Deputy Governor Shaibu Breaks Silence: “Obaseki’s Wife Told Us Atiku and Tinubu Never Won the Election

Development in Edo State’s political landscape, Mr. Philip Shaibu, the reinstated Deputy Governor, has shared his views on the ongoing political dynamics in the state. Shaibu, a central figure in Edo’s political discussions, has been at the center of controversy, particularly concerning his alleged support for an APC candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Shaibu’s political journey has been turbulent. After being impeached, he was restored to his position by a High Court ruling. Amidst rumors surrounding his political affiliation, Shaibu has addressed the speculations that he might have switched from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

When questioned about his loyalty to the PDP and his supposed endorsement of an APC candidate, Shaibu chose to focus on his right to support any candidate of his choice rather than directly addressing his party allegiance. He explained the complex political situation in Edo State, shedding light on a recent statement made by Governor Godwin Obaseki’s wife, which suggested that neither Bola Tinubu of the APC nor Atiku Abubakar of the PDP had actually won the presidential election.

Shaibu pointed out that this statement, along with Obaseki’s alleged involvement in anti-party activities, played a significant role in shaping his current stance. He implied that these events have granted him the freedom to support candidates outside the PDP without facing any consequences.

Defending his decision, Shaibu expressed his support for Senator Monday, one of the leading candidates for governor. He emphasized that the next governor of Edo State does not necessarily need to be a “homeboy” or an outsider, but rather someone who is well-qualified. In his view, Senator Monday and Mr. Akpata are the most capable candidates among the top three contenders.

Shaibu stated, “Governor Obaseki’s wife even told us that Atiku and Tinubu never won the election, and I understand. So they did anti-party, and when I saw that he did anti-party, nothing happened. And recently the government on your platform said, ‘You can support who you like.’ So I have the rights now to follow suit. I support anyone I like to, so I’m supporting Senator Monday because we do not need a homeboy now to be our governor. We don’t need an outsider, so Senator Monday and Mr. Akpata are the only two candidates in the top three.”
