Emefiele is set to be arraigned on Monday, April 8, at the Ikeja State High Court in Lagos. The charges stem from alleged abuse of office relating to the allocation of billions of dollars during his tenure as CBN Governor.

The charges were filed on Friday, April 5, coinciding with President Bola Tinubu’s receipt of the final comprehensive report from the Special Investigator tasked with probing the apex bank under Emefiele’s leadership.

Henry Isioma Omole is also charged alongside Emefiele in the case.

The charge sheet, filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Rotimi Oyedepo, outlines instances where Emefiele allegedly abused his authority by allocating foreign exchange without proper bidding processes, amounting to billions of dollars.

The charges cover a period between 2020 and 2023 and are punishable under Section 73 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Emefiele’s co-defendant, Omole, is accused of accepting a sum of $110,000 as a reward for Emefiele’s actions related to foreign exchange allocations.

Emefiele is already facing trial in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory over alleged fraudulent payments made during the 2023 general elections.

The new charges against Emefiele mark another significant development in Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts, signaling continued scrutiny of high-profile individuals accused of financial misconduct.
