FCTA Issues 24-Hour Demolition Notice To Illegal Markets And Shanties Along Karmo–Dei-Dei Road Corridor (Details)
The Department of Development Control, FCT Administration (FCTA), has given a 24-hour demolition notice to operators of illegal markets and shanties along the Karmo–Dei-Dei Road corridor.
According to NAN, over 500 illegal structures and shanties along the road corridor have been marked for demolition.
Mr. Garba Jibril, the Sector Monitor and Assistant Director in the department, led the exercise in Abuja on Monday, stating that the affected owners had previously been served with multiple notices.
Jibril explained that the Director of Development Control, Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, had held a sensitisation meeting with critical stakeholders regarding the matter.
He emphasized that demolishing the structures was necessary as they were causing a nuisance on the road, leading to heavy traffic, particularly on market days.
Jibril added that the activities of the illegal markets were also causing environmental hazards in the area, which the FCT Administration disapproved of.
Furthermore, he disclosed that the FCTA had awarded a contract for the construction of the Life Camp–Dei-Dei Road, but the continuous presence of traders along the road corridor was hindering the contractors from accessing the site.
Jibril warned that the 24-hour notice should not be taken lightly, and those who fail to comply would face consequences.
He also mentioned that the traders had been instructed to relocate to the designated Karmo Market, which is fully developed and equipped with necessary facilities.
“Despite several meetings with relevant stakeholders, including traditional leaders in the area, the traders have been reluctant to move,” he added.
