The Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande, emphasized the need for collaborative actions to prepare the youth for employability, entrepreneurship, and future leadership roles.
During a significant working visit to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Abuja, Olawande outlined the government’s plan to establish the Nigerian Youth Academy (NIYA), an institution designed to provide training and engagement opportunities for young individuals.
The initiative aims to divert the attention of the youth away from the temptation of drug abuse and criminal activities by offering them meaningful ventures.
The minister highlighted that factors such as lack of engagement, unemployment, and a prevailing skill gap have contributed to the alarming increase in drug consumption and abuse among the youth. Olawande urged the youth to shift their focus from unproductive trends and start thinking and working towards a more constructive future.
To address the issue comprehensively, the ministry intends to introduce a door-to-door campaign, led by Olawande himself, engaging with youth in all 774 Local Government Areas of the federation. This campaign, facilitated by corps members, aims to curb drug abuse, corruption, and cybercrime, particularly among secondary school students.
Olawande called on the UN to collaborate with the government in establishing the Nigerian Youth Academy, emphasizing the importance of fully engaging the youth in constructive activities.
Mr Oliver Stolp, Country Representative of UNODC, expressed appreciation for the minister’s visit and underscored the UN’s numerous intervention programs on youth engagement, drug abuse, cybercrime, and corruption. Stolp urged government support for these interventions to make a significant impact.
The UNODC World Drug Report 2023 has highlighted the expanding illicit drug markets globally, with increasing numbers of people using drugs and suffering from drug use disorders.
Against this backdrop, the Federal Government’s proactive steps, including the establishment of the Nigerian Youth Academy, signify a determined effort to combat drug abuse and empower the youth towards a more positive and productive future
