Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, confirmed this development, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare system and achieving Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) for all Nigerians.
According to a statement from the ministry’s spokesperson, Deworitshe Patricia, released in Abuja, the approval of a Sector-Wide Approach (SWAp) and the Health Sector Renewal Investment Programme (NHSRIP) is expected to catalyze health transformation, renewal, and accessibility.
Pate highlighted the necessity for reforms in the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) as discussions on enhancing Nigeria’s primary healthcare system through SWAp took place. These reforms include improvements in programs, operations, accountability mechanisms, and public trust.
All states and the Federal Capital Territory have reportedly agreed to a remediation plan aimed at enhancing health services across Nigeria. The revised guidelines will prioritize providing healthcare services to the underprivileged, aiming to reduce maternal mortality rates, out-of-pocket expenses, and ensuring consistent healthcare quality in primary healthcare facilities.
Pate emphasized the commitment of the Ministry and its development partners to making healthcare services accessible to all Nigerians, especially women, children, and vulnerable groups. The overarching goal is to reduce the need for patients to travel long distances for care, thereby enhancing overall health and wellbeing nationwide.
In conclusion, the allocation of funds and the implementation of strategic reforms underscore the government’s resolve to address healthcare challenges and improve healthcare access and quality across Nigeria.
