Led by the Forum of Northern LP Chairmen and Secretaries, the Northern Caucus is advocating for unity within the party while pressing for representation at the highest level of leadership. Despite the current national chairman, Julius Abure, hailing from the Southsouth region, the caucus argues that inclusivity and fairness necessitate a shift in leadership to the North.

During a press briefing in Bauchi State, Hussaini Saraki, the convener of the forum, emphasized the importance of unifying the party and called for the chairmanship position to be zoned to the North.

However, the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, downplayed the significance of the chairmanship contention, asserting that the party has moved past such issues following the national convention. He indicated a perceived shift towards party unity, suggesting that Saraki’s stance may not align with current party dynamics.

The LP’s national convention, which saw Abure’s reelection as chairman, has faced criticism and challenges, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) labeling it as unlawful. In response, the NLC established a transition committee to oversee party operations until a comprehensive national convention can be convened.

Saraki reiterated the Northern Caucus’s commitment to a united Labour Party, dismissing the influence of previous factions and emphasizing the need for Northern representation in the party’s leadership. He proposed that while the presidential candidate hails from the South, the chairman of the party should emerge from the North to ensure inclusivity.

As the debate intensifies and factions maneuver for influence, the Labour Party finds itself at a crossroads, grappling with internal divisions while striving to maintain cohesion and relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape.
