Expressing his support for the bill, Governor Otti clarified that it was an executive bill and commended the State House of Assembly for swiftly passing it. He assured the House of his administration’s full cooperation and assistance.

Governor Otti emphasized his long-standing belief that the practice of paying pensions to former governors and deputy governors was unsustainable, especially considering the backlog of pensions owed to retired workers since 2014. He asserted that diverting funds from pension payments for former officials towards addressing the needs of workers and pensioners was a more responsible use of state resources.

Highlighting the principles of good governance and stewardship, Governor Otti emphasized that leadership should prioritize the welfare of the people over self-interest. He stated his conviction that using public funds for personal benefits contradicts the moral obligation of leadership.

In expressing gratitude to the State House of Assembly for their cooperation, Governor Otti underscored the importance of a collaborative relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government. Presenting the bill for the governor’s assent, Speaker Emmanuel Emereuwa of the Abia State House of Assembly, represented by Deputy Speaker Austin Meregini, explained that the legislation repeals a previous law that provided for pension payments to former governors and deputy governors in the state.
