The incident occurred along Bishops Court, Area 7 Orji/Uratta Owerri, where the victim’s black Mercedes Benz G.L. 450 car, with registration number LND 826 NG, was also seized by the assailants on September 27, 2023.

Following the collection of a $50,000 ransom from the victim’s family, the perpetrators mercilessly ended the life of the retired general, causing widespread fear and concern among the residents of the state.

Speaking to the press, the spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Henry Okoye, disclosed that the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit, under the leadership of CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, immediately launched a rigorous manhunt for the criminal syndicate, known to be on the Command’s wanted list. Through meticulous intelligence gathering and sustained follow-up, the reign of terror orchestrated by the syndicate was brought to an end, culminating in the arrest of the gang leader and other members.

“Chukwunonso Emmanuel, a native of Uke in Idemili North L.G.A Anambra State, was apprehended in Lagos while attempting to procure a new plate number for the victim’s Mercedes Benz car. His confession led to the arrest of two other members of the gang, Okoroigwe Goodness, aged 24, and Innocent Ogu, aged 54. The suspects have admitted to their involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Retired Major General Richard Duru, as well as their affiliation with the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) /Eastern Security Network (ESN). They will be prosecuted accordingly upon the completion of the ongoing investigation,” stated the Commissioner.
