Just In: INEC Warns Against Proxy Collection Of PVCs Ahead Of Edo And Ondo Elections (Details)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned prospective voters in Edo and Ondo states against attempting to collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) by proxy, stating that it won’t allow it.

Speaking during the second quarterly consultative meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the need for voters to collect their PVCs in person.

Ahead of the September 21 governorship election in Edo state and the November 16 governorship election in Ondo state, INEC announced that it will commence the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise simultaneously in both states from Monday, May 27, 2024, to Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The CVR will enable eligible citizens who are not registered voters to register and those who are registered voters to transfer their registration to Edo and Ondo States or from one location to another within the states. Lost or damaged voters’ cards will also be replaced during the exercise.

Yakubu reiterated that the CVR is only open to new registrants and those who seek to transfer their registration. He emphasized that double or multiple registration is illegal and urged registered voters not to attempt to register again.

During the CVR exercise, uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) will also be made available for collection. However, INEC emphasized that no PVCs will be collected by proxy, and registered voters should come in person to collect their cards.

The list of uncollected PVCs will be published in INEC offices in the two states and simultaneously uploaded to the INEC website.

INEC appealed to Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to join in mobilizing prospective registrants for the exercise and encouraged voters to register early and not wait until the deadline approaches when the registration centers will be inundated.

Yakubu also reminded CSOs of the need to submit their applications for election observation in earnest along with the required supporting documents and a realistic number of individual observers. Regular submission of observation reports is mandatory for continuous participation in election observation, he emphasized.

The Commission urged CSOs to submit reports from previous accreditations, as these reports are essential for reviewing and improving INEC’s processes and procedures.
