JUST IN: Tinubu ‘Dissolves’ Key Ministry (DETAILS)

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, who assumed office in May, recently announced his list of ministers along with their respective portfolios on Wednesday.

Furthermore, Tinubu introduced new ministries and made modifications to the names of some existing ones in his administration.

President Tinubu’s decision to abolish the Ministry of Niger Delta was reported by local media, and its responsibilities will now be transferred to the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

This step was taken due to overlapping functions between the two entities.

Earlier in May, Nigerian Senator Orji Uzor Kalu had suggested eliminating the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, stating that certain ministries that were no longer effective should be scrapped.

He cited the existence of the Niger Delta Development Commission and the North East Development Commission as examples.

In addition to the abolition of the Ministry of Niger Delta, several existing ministries have undergone name changes. These include the Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management, which is now known as the Ministry of Environment; the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy; the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, now the Ministry of Health; the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, now the Ministry of Aviation; and the Ministry of Gas Resources.

The Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy has been renamed as the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development has been rebranded as the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This ministry will be led by Betta Edu, a Nigerian politician and the national women leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress party.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development has been divided into two separate ministries: the Ministry of Youth and the Ministry of Sports Development.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has initiated a series of economic reforms aimed at revitalizing the Nigerian economy.

Notable measures include the abolition of the fuel subsidy, which previously led to artificially low petrol prices, and reforms in the country’s energy sector.

These initiatives have sparked some protests and debates across the country.
