Justice Served: Officer Who Shot Popular Nigerian Musician Faces Dismissal And Murder Charges

The incident occurred on the evening of October 25, 2024, at the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad headquarters in Enugu State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Enugu Police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed that Joseph was found guilty. He has received the maximum penalty of dismissal, followed by prosecution in accordance with the Police Act and Regulations 2020.
The statement read: “The Enugu State Police Command informs the public that the orderly room trial of Police Inspector Ozonwanji Joseph, implicated in the murder of Ogene musician Chikezie Okezie Nwamba, has been concluded. The Inspector was found culpable and has been dismissed, with court prosecution to follow.”
Ndukwe further noted, “The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 13, has approved the recommendations for dismissal and prosecution. Consequently, he has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force and was arraigned at the Enugu East Magistrate Court today, October 28, 2024, on a murder charge.”
The Chief Magistrate has ordered the former officer to be remanded at the Enugu Correctional Custodial Centre, and the case file will be sent to the Attorney General of Enugu State for further action. The trial is set to resume on November 12, 2024.
Commissioner of Police Kanayo Uzuegbu extended his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and expressed gratitude to the government and people of Enugu State for their support during the proceedings. He emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, assuring the public that disciplinary measures will be enforced against any erring officers under his leadership.
