Kaduna Govt Explains – Why We Sealed Commercial Bank
The Kaduna Internal Revenue Service (KADIRS) recently sealed branches of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in the state metropolis due to alleged non-payment of N14.3 million in taxes. According to Hajiya Aysha Ahmad, the KADIRS Board Secretary/Legal Adviser, the enforcement action was taken after repeated demand notices were ignored by the bank…..READ ALSO Kaduna Assembly Replies El-Rufai’s Son – ‘Your Threats Won’t Stop Probe’
Ahmad emphasized that the purpose of the enforcement was to ensure tax compliance across the state, particularly concerning withholding taxes and money agents. Despite multiple attempts to engage with the bank and seek voluntary compliance, they remained recalcitrant, leaving the KADIRS with no choice but to seal the premises.
She clarified that once the outstanding taxes are paid, the premises will be unsealed. This enforcement action is part of the broader effort to achieve the N120 billion revenue target set by the Kaduna State Government.
Addressing concerns about legal proceedings, Ahmad explained that the matter had been taken to court, and the outcome at the tax appeal tribunal favored the KADIRS. Despite the court’s directives to review the assessment, the bank still failed to comply, leading to the enforcement action.
Ahmad urged residents of Kaduna State to fulfill their civic responsibility by voluntarily complying with tax obligations. This approach is crucial for generating revenue needed for the state’s development and essential services.
By sealing the UBA branches, the KADIRS aims to send a clear message about the importance of tax compliance and its commitment to enforcing tax laws for the benefit of the state’s economy and development initiatives.
