Karimi Expresses Doubt Over Tinubu’s Willingness To Grant Posthumous Recognition To Nwosu

Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West Senatorial District, has expressed skepticism regarding President Bola Tinubu’s willingness to posthumously honor Humphrey Nwosu, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He remarked, “President Obasanjo served for eight years and did not name anything after Nwosu. The same goes for Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari. Now that Nwosu is deceased, it is unlikely that President Tinubu will name anything after him.”

This statement follows remarks from the current INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who, during a tribute to Nwosu, advocated for posthumous recognition of the late INEC chairman. Yakubu highlighted Nwosu’s pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s electoral system, particularly his implementation of the Option A4 voting method and the Open Ballot System during his tenure from 1989 to 1993.

The matter is now under discussion in both chambers of the National Assembly, with some Nigerians arguing that, since former President Buhari recognized MKO Abiola, who was posthumously honored for winning the 1993 presidential election, Nwosu, who oversaw the election, should also be acknowledged for his contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.
