Lagos Police Commissioner Probes DPO Over Alleged Bribery Scandal
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, has launched an investigation into bribery allegations against Epe Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Godwin Okoruwa….CONTINUE READING
The move follows a publication titled “Lagos DPO Queried For Accepting N2m To Release Suspected Armed Robbers,” which claimed that Okoruwa accepted a N2 million cheque from a local monarch to release four suspected armed robbers.
Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Humdeyin, clarified that CP Fayoade ordered the investigation and instructed Okoruwa to step aside during the inquiry. The online publication had suggested that the CP had queried Okoruwa over the alleged bribery incident.
Humdeyin stated, “CP Adegoke Fayoade has ordered an investigation into the allegations contained in this publication. Pending the outcome of the investigation and on the instructions of the CP, the DPO has stepped aside.”
Contrary to claims in the publication, Humdeyin emphasized that there was no truth in the assertion that Okoruwa had been queried. He confirmed that the suspects were transferred to the headquarters on the same day they were arrested.
A police source, familiar with the situation, refuted the bribery allegations, stating that Okoruwa had not received any bribe and had no association with the monarch. The source explained that conflicts between the monarch and Okoruwa had been ongoing. During a stop-and-search operation led by Okoruwa’s team, two locally made pistols and a Sienna bus were seized. Another DPO in Epe expressed interest in the case, but Okoruwa, adhering to protocol, declined to release the suspects. The CP then directed Okoruwa to transfer the case to the headquarters.
The police source expressed surprise at the online allegations, suggesting a deliberate attempt to tarnish Okoruwa’s reputation. The investigation aims to determine the accuracy of these claims and decide the appropriate course of action.
