Leadership Rift Deepens: PDP BoT Challenges NWC On NEC Postponement

(NWC) for its repeated postponements of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
At an emergency session in Abuja, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara expressed concern over the delays, emphasizing that such actions erode trust among party members. He further announced plans for a January meeting with former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike to seek lasting peace.
The acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has come under fire since assuming his role after Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal. Critics cite a lack of decisive leadership amid the party’s escalating crises, with many calling for Damagum’s resignation.
Endless Delays and Frustration
The 98th NEC meeting in April mandated key actions, including the formation of a reconciliation committee and a North Central caucus to select a permanent chairman. However, the 99th NEC meeting, initially set for August, has faced multiple postponements, with no new date in sight. The PDP Governors Forum has now urged the NWC to convene the NEC by February.
Wabara highlighted the importance of adhering to commitments, stating, “Continued delays undermine confidence and risk deepening divisions within the party. The NEC is critical for resolving issues and shaping the party’s future.”
Calls for Unity and Accountability
Wabara reiterated that the PDP’s strength lies in its unity and democratic values. He urged the NWC to show leadership by prioritizing dialogue and collaboration, warning that further delays could worsen existing challenges.
“The BoT will continue to act as the conscience of the party, working relentlessly to restore peace and accountability,” Wabara affirmed. “We will begin renewed efforts for reconciliation in the new year, starting with former Governor Nyesom Wike.”
Support for BoT’s Actions
The BoT’s intervention has garnered praise from party leaders. Former National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan described the move as “timely and patriotic,” aligning with demands from the North Central Zone for a resolution to the acting chairmanship issue.
Ologbondiyan added, “This courageous decision reflects the collective will of the party and reinforces our commitment to fairness and equity.”
Charting a New Course
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges under the current administration, Wabara stressed the PDP’s role in presenting credible alternatives and championing the voices of struggling Nigerians. Internally, he urged party members to set aside personal ambitions for the greater good of the nation.
With mounting pressure on the NWC, February 2024 will serve as a crucial test for the PDP’s ability to resolve its internal divisions and reclaim its position as a leading voice in Nigeria’s democracy.
