In February 2024, Peter Obi called for a thorough investigation into embezzlement allegations against Abure, sparked by accusations from Oluchi Oparah, the party’s national treasurer, who claimed that Abure misappropriated N3.5 billion. Oparah also accused the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of colluding with the Edo State Government and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the September 2024 gubernatorial elections.

Abure faced further backlash over his alleged plan to convene a National Convention without proper procedures. Despite objections from stakeholders, including the House of Reps Caucus and the NLC, Abure’s NWC planned to hold the convention in Umuahia, Abia State, on March 27.
