LP Turmoil Deepens: Peter Obi And Obidients Distance Themselves From Abure As Quest For New Chairman Commences
The turbulence engulfing the Labour Party, LP, escalated last week as members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, staged protests at the party’s national headquarters and several state offices……READ ALSO Peter Obi Reacts To Release Of Abducted Kaduna Students
Signs also emerged suggesting that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and his supporters, known as Obidients, have withdrawn their support from the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, amid ongoing internal strife since the conclusion of the 2023 general elections.
Following a string of legal battles with the factional chairman Lamidi Apapa, Abure has been embroiled in allegations of financial misconduct and other controversies.
Abure’s Persistent Financial Scandals
In February 2024, Peter Obi called for a thorough investigation into embezzlement allegations against Abure, sparked by accusations from Oluchi Oparah, the party’s national treasurer, who claimed that Abure misappropriated N3.5 billion. Oparah also accused the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) of colluding with the Edo State Government and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the September 2024 gubernatorial elections.
Furthermore, the NLC Political Commission, chaired by Comrades Titus Amba and Chris Uyot, expressed concerns over recurring scandals and pending fraud cases, condemning Abure’s leadership style.
Abure’s Administration Under Scrutiny
Critics have accused Abure of running the LP as a “sole administrator,” prompting protests by the NLC at the party’s headquarters in Abuja. Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, highlighted workers’ grievances against Abure’s leadership, emphasizing the need for his resignation.
Similarly, a letter from Comrades Titus Amba and Chris Uyot criticized Abure for his lack of commitment to the Labour Party’s ideology.
Controversy Surrounding National Convention
Abure faced further backlash over his alleged plan to convene a National Convention without proper procedures. Despite objections from stakeholders, including the House of Reps Caucus and the NLC, Abure’s NWC planned to hold the convention in Umuahia, Abia State, on March 27.
However, this move was met with resistance, leading to protests and demands for Abure’s resignation. The NLC Political Commission denounced the planned convention as illegal, emphasizing the need for transparency and inclusivity in party affairs.
Quest for New Leadership
Amidst the turmoil, speculation arises about Comrade Isaac Balami, former Deputy National Campaign Manager to Peter Obi/Dati Presidential Campaign, emerging as Abure’s potential successor. Although Balami acknowledges pressure to contest the chairmanship, uncertainties persist regarding the convention and internal party dynamics.
While addressing concerns about the convention, Dr. Yunusa Salisu Tanko stressed the importance of building a party structure that represents everyone’s interests, echoing calls for transparency and openness.
Regarding rumors of Peter Obi’s departure from the Labour Party, Tanko dismissed them as untrue, affirming the party’s commitment to unity and progress.
The search for a new chairman signifies a pivotal moment for the LP, as stakeholders strive to navigate through internal rifts and uphold the party’s principles amidst challenging times.
