The Boeing 777, which was carrying 239 passengers and crew, disappeared from radar on March 8, 2014, while traveling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Despite the most extensive search operation in aviation history, the aircraft has never been located.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that on December 13, the government tentatively agreed to proceed with a search proposed by Ocean Infinity, a company based in the U.S. and the U.K., in a new area spanning approximately 15,000 square kilometers in the southern Indian Ocean.

Loke stated, “The proposal from Ocean Infinity is a solid one that deserves to be explored further.”

The Ministry of Transport is currently working out the terms of the agreement, which is expected to be finalized by early 2025. The new search will be conducted on a “no find, no fee” basis, meaning the Malaysian government will only pay Ocean Infinity if the aircraft is discovered.

The company had previously conducted a search operation in 2018 without yielding any results.

“The new search area suggested by Ocean Infinity is informed by the latest data analysis and insights from experts and researchers,” Loke explained.

He added that the decision for a renewed search demonstrates the Malaysian government’s commitment to continuing efforts to locate the aircraft and provide closure for the families of the MH370 victims.

Following the plane’s disappearance, an Australian-led search covering 120,000 square kilometers (46,000 square miles) in the Indian Ocean found minimal evidence, with only a few debris pieces recovered. That operation concluded in January 2017, followed by Ocean Infinity’s initial search.

The mystery surrounding the plane’s disappearance has led to numerous theories, some credible and others far-fetched, including claims that veteran pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah had acted unreasonably. A final report published in 2018 identified deficiencies in air traffic control and highlighted that the aircraft’s course was altered manually.
