Mikel Backs Victor Osimhen, Urges Fairness in Player-Coach Disputes
Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi voiced support for Victor Osimhen amid the player’s controversial social media outburst directed at former Super Eagles coach Finidi George. Osimhen’s public criticism followed remarks from Finidi questioning his commitment to the national team, sparking a heated online exchange.
Mikel, however, has refrained from blaming Osimhen, stating that the striker’s frustration was understandable, especially given Nigeria’s poor results against South Africa and Benin Republic. “While his reaction may not have been ideal, I understand why he felt the need to defend himself,” Mikel explained.
The former Chelsea star highlighted the importance of mutual respect between players and coaches. “Every time I speak to Osimhen, he’s humble and respects people. Respect is reciprocal. I respect you, you respect me. In this case, he felt the coach didn’t protect him, which led to his reaction.”
Mikel also revealed that Osimhen’s frustrations were fueled by a recorded conversation with Finidi, which later became public. “Osimhen felt betrayed, as the manager threw him under the bus. While the way he expressed his feelings may not have been the best, he had every right to speak out,” Mikel added.
Mikel’s comments point to the delicate balance between player autonomy and coach authority in football, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and understanding in resolving conflicts.
