NAFDAC’s Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, debunked claims of fake drug proliferation, citing national surveys and scientific sampling methods conducted across the country. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Adeyeye reiterated the agency’s dedication to monitoring and addressing the prevalence of substandard medicines.
Addressing stakeholders, Adeyeye emphasized the importance of preventing, detecting, and responding to substandard and falsified medicinal products. NAFDAC’s efforts extend beyond local borders, with measures in place to intercept approved products en route from Southeast Asia to Nigeria. Adeyeye underscored the necessity of stringent regulations, announcing a new directive requiring raw materials for registered products to be sourced from approved suppliers.
The engagement highlighted the critical role of the pharmaceutical supply chain in ensuring the distribution of safe and quality medicines. Adeyeye urged against purchasing medicines from informal markets, emphasizing the dangers posed by counterfeit drugs. Stakeholders from various organizations, including the World Health Organization, Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, and others, contributed valuable insights to guide collective efforts in combating substandard and falsified medical products.
NAFDAC’s resolute stance and collaborative approach signify a unified effort to safeguard public health and eradicate the scourge of fake drugs in Nigeria.
