Nigerian Innovator Launches Global Nonprofit To Empower Communities Through Financial Education
A Nigerian-born technology and financial services professional, Serome Akoroda, has launched a nonprofit initiative known as Open Hands by Serome, aimed at breaking barriers that hinder individuals and communities from achieving financial success.
According to Ireporter Online, the organisation was officially unveiled on September 12 in Washington, D.C., drawing the participation of distinguished guests both in person and virtually. Built around the guiding principle of “empowering communities through social capital,” the initiative seeks to uplift underserved groups through a comprehensive approach to financial empowerment.
With a focus on three key pillars — talent monetisation, financial literacy, and career development through technology education — Open Hands provides people with the tools and knowledge necessary to take control of their financial and professional lives. Serome emphasised that financial empowerment should extend beyond the traditional understanding of budgeting, saving, and investing. Instead, she advocates a holistic approach that addresses income generation, expense management, investments, and skill acquisition to help individuals achieve long-term financial stability.
Drawing from her extensive background in the financial sector across Nigeria and the United States — including roles at Access Bank, United Bank for Africa, and Amazon — Serome said her professional journey shaped her understanding of how financial stability drives growth, both for businesses and individuals. Her experience in structuring complex financial solutions for multinational firms has inspired her to help others build strong financial foundations through education and mentorship.
Serome, who has also authored a book guiding MBA applicants on financing their studies, explained that her years in finance have equipped her to identify gaps in financial understanding and empower others to make sound financial decisions.
Tekevwe Akoroda, Technical Director of Open Hands, disclosed that the nonprofit plans to harness the power of artificial intelligence to expand its reach. He revealed that the organisation is developing a generative AI language model designed to enhance operational efficiency and accessibility. The model will feature a financial calculator capable of handling complex computations such as debt, taxes, and mortgage estimates, while also helping users understand the financial implications of their choices.
According to Tekevwe, the AI tool will further support Open Hands’ mission by simplifying financial education, tackling student debt, and offering personalised career development guidance. The organisation also intends to collaborate with government bodies, corporations, and media outlets to secure funding and broaden its visibility.
Serome reaffirmed that the nonprofit’s vision is to ensure that individuals everywhere — regardless of background — can access the resources and tools needed for financial empowerment and sustainable growth.
